Most silicone leather problems trace back to an incomplete specification rather than a material fault. The face looks right in the sample book, the order is placed, and then the material will not hold the seam, will not stay flat, or does not match the approved colour under the customer's lighting. These are the five decisions that prevent that.
The backing decides whether the sheet can be sewn, wrapped, laminated or formed, and whether it stays flat. Microfibre for upholstery, PET film for flat lamination, polycarbonate for self-supporting parts, woven glass fibre where dimensional stability is critical. This is the first decision, not the last.
Thickness interacts with the backing: a thin film-backed sheet and a dense fleece-backed sheet of the same nominal thickness feel entirely different. Specify the hand you need — soft and drapey, or full and structured — alongside the number.
Grain depth, matte or sheen, and nap all change the perceived quality of the finished product. Ask for the surface to be confirmed on a physical swatch, and confirm the grain direction if the pattern is directional.
Approve colour under the lighting the product will actually be seen in, and approve it on the final backing rather than on a generic card. Metamerism — where two colours match under one light and differ under another — is a real risk on soft matte surfaces and is resolved by approving the production construction.
State the standards the product must meet and the environment it will face: indoor or outdoor, cleaning chemicals, contact with skin, flame requirements, and any restricted-substance regime your market imposes. Requirements are confirmed against test documentation for the specific construction, not assumed from the material family.
Send five things: the application, the process (sew, wrap, laminate, form), the panel size, the colour reference, and the standards you must meet. With those, a supplier can name a construction instead of asking you to choose from a catalogue.
